To The Lighthouse

Nothing better than a sail

rides the waves and sky

cutting through the water

correcting all the time.

Tower waiting patiently

destination near

bowing to it briefly

waves right in the ear.

As we went to

Martha's Vineyard

my dad, my wife

and me.

It was a brilliant windy day

we saw the ships sailing

although I overstate a bit

we did the ferry scene.

Mother passed some years before

dad living now alone

we flew up from Virginia

was good to return home.

So many misadventures

and yet accomplished this

married a good woman

lovely, intelligent.

Off we went to Martha's place

my father looked at me

perhaps a little envious

or just feeling happy.

Taking photos of the sails

as they flew around

lighthouse in the distance

aware of us somehow.

I knew that I could do it

raised the kids repaired

in my early fifties

solved all the problems then.

And here now decades later

life's journey full of bends

Dad has joined my mother

lights out in the West End.

Living in the country

with someone who is kind

reminds me that the

best found coin

shines in a loving eye.

Looking for a little boat

travels in the van

single sail and rudder

too

the lake nearby

waiting.

No lighthouse just some hiking trails

although we can't walk far

still the waves will carry us

out to the isle sandbar.

I know will make her happy

I'm ordering it today

it will delight the family

this memory will play.

Nonie collects small lighthouses

they're all around the house!

I noted them on our first date

"this way your journey scout".
