Today, she said, "I want some chicken, KFC, downtown" and so we loaded up the car and headed out. Up and down the mountain roads, nothing ever flat. I was the right side passenger, with headphones on, listening to tuning forks. Filling up on dopamine. Hopefully. The jitters like to stay away when the D topped off. My new plan for being well: Headphones and the sun. Puffy clouds and lots of trees. Not driving and away from thought. Being empty, blessed and taught. Taking in the views flash by; family homes, storefronts, a river side. Cars, of course, are all around. Don't think about them. Just riding inside one of the same. My wife used to drive 18-wheelers. I can relax with her in charge.
Nonie does most of the driving. Dealing with the traffic. Driving down steep, long hills, braking occasionally. Past the place where washers, dryers, sit next to the road. Piles of them exposed to weather, "Parts Are Us" to go. Past the Pizza restaurant big curve, house we didn't buy. Up to the stop light, old high school, a craft show there tonight. Drug store on the corner. Sign says get your shots. Let them vaccinate you. I have to ask "Why?". Twenty-seven thousand days and more been here and stayed alive without going to a drug store and getting powerful medicine injected into my veins by a pharmacist. My nervous system is already half wrecked. We are trying to save the other half not knock it off.
The tuning forks were still working but the sign has done a hit and run. Next time I won't look up at the sign. Stick to clouds in the future. So now we were at the KFC place. All those people inside with the dead chickens! I really do feel for them. And the chickens as well. We don't come to this place often. Maybe twice in four years. And I had to wonder at this point, about the dopamine production. I'm not really feeling the tank filling up, but we are out of there with the bucket and things are better.
All the washing machines are on the other side of the road.
A guy is walking down the side of the road and a car came over in our lane to stay away from him. He's walking down in the grass so this makes no sense but it, the car, swerves back again into its own lane before we get there. There are a lot of people walking these days. And poor drivers on the road as well. Next summer pot is going to be legal here in Virginia. Maybe people will stay home more and relax. I'm hoping. Or, they can be passengers with headphones and not smoke in the car. Just ride, be quiet and enjoy the scenery. Visualize something positive. Raise chickens for the eggs, don't terrorize them and cut off their heads, fry them in unhealthy oil, put them on sale and entice someone who doesn't want to cook one night to drive downtown and spend a lot of money to eat them.
So my little experiment with the tuning forks didn't go very well. It had it's ups and downs for sure. And now it's two am and I can't sleep as usual so we are sitting here trying to write. I do sleep awhile every night so it's not really a problem. It is more of an experiment to see how life goes if one is awake most of the time. I don't have to go off to work in the morning which is a blessing. When it comes down to it, just that fact and the presence of a wonderful partner, plus the knowledge that I do not have dementia or some other terrible disease are the blessings that keep me moving forward.
It's so quiet out here at night. The stars are beautiful out back. There's no traffic. Maybe the forks did their stuff and it just takes awhile for the vibe to sink through the stupid parts and lift up the bones.
I don't know. But KFC is going downhill. Let my chickens go.
They could run around here in the backyard. There's even a little house for them out there someone built years ago. I could set up speakers and play tuning forks or Van Halen. We might enjoy being retired together.
