May showers here and want to stay
make the grass flash out
fill in spaces bare dirt places
make a lawn somehow.
Mowed it this past weekend
thick weeds grown real high
looks some better still a leper
with a haircut
fine.
Oatmeal mixed with strawberries
for beakfast this dark morn
watching scenic video
Sequoias skyward borne.
Music and some ancient views
not a bird bark here
maybe they are hunkered down
lightning
charged the air.
Not the kind seems worrying
no wind or breeze at all
but unattaching a few things
in case it comes for us.
So, of course, it doesn't
thunder goes away
silence in the living room
the tv off
Okay.
Still I have the phone to write
lets put the poem aside
let it grow just as the lawn
one rough day at a time.
Let the spot between my eyes
think about the rhymes
put a few together
explode them when it's time.
Yesterday was Mother's Day
with thoughts of struggles too
waiting for her thunder
remembering her views.
As she fed us every day
helped us with new clothes
every year school started with
the new Sears catalog.
Mom's are always listening
I hear them often speak
have a little cry o'er us
could thunder be their beat?
They know something is coming
research all the pain
tell me mom what's happening
thank you for the rain
Ladies from the neighborhood
gathered under trees
in a circle with iced coffee
enjoyed a summer breeze.
I think they still are at it
up there with their drinks
three quarter cent
since they were here
5k realty street.
Solid little boxes
basement and a den
mothers up and down
the road
always
eyes on kids.
In the twilight racing
laughter after dark
as I listened in my room
momma said don't start.
Mosquitoes nearly killed me
or the stuff they sprayed
reaper ever present
5k coffins
graves.
Only took me sixty years
to figure out her charm
she thought she was
protecting me
her little bug from harm.
Still she had a rock garden
a flowering affair
and children ran
through yards till ten
I heard them all out there.
