Lawrence Of Arabia ***
Me and my third baseman
out there in the dirt
trying to field hot ground balls
throw runners out at first.
He hit the ball so hard one day
it traveled out the park
down the hill to our old school
no doubt watched by Telstar.
Neither of us were much good
off and on at best
once a ball went through his legs
I made the play instead.
Larry was a friend of mine
memories fading fast
but forever here we keep
team photos till the last.
Lawrence of Arabia
arrived about that time
early sixties war is waiting
baseball brutal slides.
Youngsters on their motorcycles
arching long fly balls
as with TE Lawrence
sometimes hitting the wall.
Add him to the pantheon
remembered as we go
gather someday on the hill
T.E's smiling now.
Tonight the winds are blowing
across a nation bruised
I leave the bed with
my young friends
swing for the fences too.
